Specht (German)

noun: (masc.) woodpecker

While watching Dan hand turning a timber portafilter handle on a lathe, his wife Adriana mentioned how he reminded her of a woodpecker, as the chips of timber went flying through the air. With Dan’s German heritage in mind, the name Specht was born.

With 17 years of experience in the furniture and cabinet making industry, director Dan Schonknecht created the concept behind Specht, when he combined his love of timber and passion for coffee. Based in Melbourne Australia, we specialise in bespoke coffee machine customisation and handmade timber accessories, that can be found in cafe’s and homes all over the globe. We source a combination of local, international and recycled timbers, among other raw materials.

Attention to detail is at the core of every custom machine and individual piece, giving each it’s own unique qualities. Every project is carefully planned, drawing inspiration from a cafe’s interior design, through to the history of it’s building and even the client’s own personality. We aspire to create infinite possibilities in espresso machine customisation, while staying true to the Specht style you’ve come to know and love.

Designers inspire fellow designers & we are often awed by what our products inspire others to create. Melbourne-based Dan Schonknecht, or @specht_design on Instagram, is one such designer. Using timber pieces, he creates customizations for espresso machines & accessories. In June of 2015, he took the leap from working on this as a side business to a full-time endeavor.
